Nymphaea thermarum
Individual 2

SM-0131 · Individual 2
Record review: October 29, 2026 · Latest recorded condition: October 18, 2026

The second seed-grown waterlily in our thermarum record has its own arrival, leaf condition, substrate history and measurements. It shares a reported source population with Individual 1; its observations remain separate.

Latest recorded condition

On October 18, Stephen reported that both plants looked much better, especially Individual 2. The October 24 instrument readings added measurement evidence but no new plant-health photograph or condition assessment.

Current record status: observe only. Preserve the living comparison. These observations do not authorize general fertilizer or abrupt changes to water, pH, substrate or light.

The October 8 owner report places Individual 2 in combined RO- and rainwater no-additive control mock-pot material. Exact transplant timing and the final mixture proportions are unresolved. The original arrival substrate is a historical stage, not its current recipe.

Dated history

  1. Arrival as a separate individual

Stephen reported arrival at approximately 1:35 PM Eastern, with an arrival water/root-zone temperature of 79.0 °F. About four green leaves and an older yellow leaf with scattered blemishes were reported. The plant joined the established growing environment while retaining its individual identity.

  2. Fresh growth and an older damaged leaf

Photographs documented several green leaves and a small fresh light-green leaf emerging at the crown. An older arrival-condition leaf remained yellow with marginal damage.

  3. Condition and condensation recorded

Photographs showed progressive yellowing and a substantial translucent to tan-brown area on a central pad, with greener pads retained and the crown appearing intact. Heavy enclosure condensation was also documented. Actual droplet impact, infection and a causal connection were not established.

  4. Instrument measurements began

Apera records associated with Individual 2 included pH 7.17 at 79.7 °F at 06:01:15 AM. Other instrument modes were recorded separately. Sampling position was not documented; raw conductivity units and conflicting temperature labels in some exports remain qualified in the source journal.

  5. Combined control material introduced

Individual 2 was reported transplanted into combined no-additive control mock-pot material. Individual 1 received different, combined amended material. Exact transplant timing remains unresolved. The four separate off-plant mock pots were confirmed completed on October 9.

  6. A new leaf beside older injury

Photographs documented a small fresh glossy green leaf emerging at the crown, while several older leaves remained brown or necrotic. The surface appeared saturated. This checkpoint does not by itself establish sustained recovery.

  7. Improvement reported

Stephen reported that both individuals looked much better, especially Individual 2. No new measurement accompanied this observation, and no cause was assigned.

Measured values, with their limits

The selected Apera readings below are associated with Individual 2. The sampling location and sample type were not documented. They must not be relabeled as substrate, root-zone or pot-water measurements.

The accession journal documents native-export review for the October 13 values and the October 24 conductivity value. The October 24 pH value was recovered from the paired-reading conversation summary; its original export was not independently reopened in that reconciliation. The one-second uncertainty in its timestamp is retained.

These measurements were taken separately. Unrecorded sampling positions, water additions and calibration context limit comparison across dates. The October 13 thermometer probe was between the outer container and inner pot; that separate clarification does not establish where the Apera sample was measured.

What remains unresolved

Individual 2 is not a matched experimental replicate of Individual 1: their earlier histories and composite media differ. The post-transplant observations do not isolate an amendment effect or establish an optimum pH, conductivity or temperature.

The useful next record is a label-visible photograph of the crown and newest leaf, older lesions and water level, with the top-off history. If the living protocol requires another paired measurement, document the same sampling method and location for both plants, calibration status and exact times.

No individual-specific fertilizer application, verified flowering, fruiting, offset or nursery-propagation outcome is established in this page's source review. Individual 1's September 6 foliar application predates Individual 2's arrival and must not be copied into its treatment history. Current physical condition, exact final substrate proportions and reproducible water volumes remain missing.

Evidence and interpretation

  • Published evidence: Kew's Plants of the World Online accepts Nymphaea thermarum Eb.Fisch. in Nymphaeaceae. This reference supports the taxonomic name, not independent authentication of this nursery specimen.
  • Nursery observations: dated owner reports, photographs and instrument records summarized from the existing SM-0131 accession research journal, reviewed through October 24.
  • Interpretation: fresh growth, older injury and the dated improvement report are retained without assigning a cause.
  • Hypotheses: condensation, environmental conditions, water additions and substrate chemistry are possible influences; their effects have not been isolated.
  • Unknowns: exact parentage, current condition, sampling details and a causal explanation of the changes.

Earlier records used “clone” as an informal label. Both plants are seed-grown; common source population does not establish identical genetics or a known sibling relationship. This record retains the existing master identifier and Individual 2 label.
